Stretching May Not Be Necessary For Young
A review by
Australian researchers concludes studies do not support the notion that
stretching before or after exercising benefits young, healthy adults.
The review,
published in the Cochrane Library, found most estimates showed stretching
reduced soreness by less than 1 point on a 100-point scale assessing stiffness
-- whether or not stretching was performed before or after an activity.
"The data were
remarkably consistent," Herbert said in a statement. "The available evidence
suggests that stretching before or after exercise does not prevent muscle
soreness in young healthy adults."
However, the
researchers said they believe there is a need to see whether stretching
can have an effect on people who have reduced levels of flexibility.
