British Ponder Tax on Gas Guzzlers

E-mail Story

LONDON-- The British government is considering an additional $2,000 in fees for automobiles to persuade drivers to switch to more fuel-efficient greener vehicles.

The Times of London revealed Saturday the government commissioned a report recommending strict measures to influence drivers to opt for more environmentally friendly vehicles.

The new measures would impose additional taxes and fees on drivers of gas-guzzling larger vehicles while providing incentives for manufacturers to step up the launch of gas-electric vehicles.

Julia King of Aston University, the reviewing institute, said that hybrids, rather than vehicles using alternative fuels, provide a better option for diminishing dependence on fossil fuels and recommends a 30 percent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions standards over the next decade.

King's support of hybrid vehicles is based on the emissions from the production of alternative fuels.

The Royal Automobile Club Foundation for Motoring, however, said the recommendations impose undue penalties.

RAC Director Edmund King said, "Big increases in road tax could also be counterproductive because it can be greener for a low-mileage driver to keep running a larger car than switch to a hybrid."
