British Sperm Donors May Lose Anonymity
Sperm donors
in the U.K. may soon lose their right to anonymity, if the government announces
expected changes to policy.
The changes
would give children born of donated sperm the right to trace their biological
fathers, the BBC reported.
Fertility experts
fear such legislation would scare off possible donors in a time when donations
are already scarce.
They say the
loss of donor anonymity could drive many patients seeking sperm donation
to go abroad, where the screening guidelines may not be as rigorous.
Those supporting
the policy say a child's right to know his or her origin outweighs the donor's
right to remain anonymous, while opponents say the policy would take away
a parent's choice whether or not to tell their children that they were
fathered by a donor.
