LONDON, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Bows, paper, boxes and that plastic that's impossible to open -- British families will toss up to 3 tons of trash this Christmas, British officials report.
Trading standards officers and lawmakers have called upon manufacturers to reduce the piles of packaging used to wrap up toys -- especially after a survey reported 75 percent of the playthings were encased in at least their own weight in packaging, The Independent reported.
Dawn Robinson, a trading standards officer, said she and others were "shocked" by thefindings. The worst offender in the survey was a 5-ounce Bratz camping tent toy protected by 1.5 pounds of packaging.
The holiday season accounts for an extra 750 million glass containers and 500 million cans, up to 1 billion Christmas cards and enough wrapping paper to cover the island of Guernsey, the British newspaper said.
