Vegetarian options urged for school lunch

WASHINGTON, May 4 (UPI) -- The 15-year-old daughter of Montel Williams is featured in a television ad urging that vegetarian options be offered in U.S. public schools.

In the TV commercial, Wyntergrace Williams urges Congress to amend the Child Nutrition Act to include meatless meals.

"Some of us don't eat right," Wyntergrace says in the commercial. "Fast food, junk food -- sometimes, even our school lunches have too much fat and cholesterol. More than 80 of Americans believe that vegetarian meals should be available in schools to children who want them, a recent survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation found."

The commercial, produced by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, will air on local network affiliates in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington during morning news shows, children's programs and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," a statement said.

In meetings on Capitol Hill, Wyntergrace Williams joined Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in calling on Congress and President Barack Obama to fight childhood obesity by helping schools serve more fruits, vegetables and low-fat vegetarian foods.
