White Tea Has Antibacterial Properties
U.S. researchers
said white tea extract may be able to retard the growth of bacteria that
cause serious infections.
Researchers
at Pace University said the extract has been effective in fighting infections
of Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, pneumonia and dental caries.
They discovered
the property by observing the interaction between the extract and zones
of bacteria grown in lab dishes.
They found
white tea was more effective than green tea in fighting viral infections
as well, and they suggested that adding white tea extract to toothpaste
to enhance its anti-microbial effect.
Other studies
have indicated the extract has an anti-fungal property.
In its presence,
Penicillium spores and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells were totally
inactivated, the researchers said.
