How to avoid sickness while traveling

CHICAGO, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. travel medicine experts advise taking precautions to minimize health risks while traveling internationally.

Dr. Bert Lopansri and colleagues at Chicago's Loyola University Health System International Medicine and Traveler's Immunization Clinic advise first preparing for risks that may exist at the destination and maintaining hygiene awareness throughout the journey.

"Just because it says resort or five-star hotel doesn't mean it's safe," Laura Gonzalez says in a statement. "You still need to watch what you eat, protect against insect bites and don't go out at night alone."

The Loyola experts advise staying away from buffet dining and packing sanitizing wipes -- rather than sanitizing gel -- so eating utensils can be wiped down as well as hands.

They also advise:
-- Preparing for jet lag and high-altitude destinations by staying rested and well-hydrated, while being careful about water quality.
-- Avoiding dangerous personal activities -- risky sexual behavior, getting tattoos, using drugs and having acupuncture.
-- Using alcohol in moderation and being sensitive to the cultures visited.
-- In tropical destinations avoiding fresh water swimming and walking barefoot.

A fever after returning from the tropics calls for immediate medical attention, Gonzalez says.
