MACCABI Victoria
has received a major boost with news that it will receive Federal Government
funding over the next three years for its Healthy Lifestyle initiative.
The newly created
program was set up to promote healthy living through recreational and sport
and Maccabi Victoria president Russell Jaffe told The AJN he hopes the
initiative will help spruik the healthy living message to the community.
“We’re really
excited about having an umbrella club that will take in a whole range of
recreational activities. It could be bushwalking, it could be cycling,
it could be anything,” Jaffe said.
“We’re really
trying to focus on the message of healthy lifestyle and recreation.”
The Healthy
Active Australia Community and Schools Grants’ Program, which operates
under the auspices of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing,
was set up to provide grants to not-for-profit organisations that promote
healthy living at a local, grassroots level.
While the amount
of money Maccabi Victoria will receive is yet to be determined, The AJN
understands the application was for $180,000 over three years.
Jaffe said the
money would be spent on hiring personnel to manage the program and equipment.
“The money will
go towards getting one, maybe two project workers, it will enable us to
work with the schools and we’ll also try to get a field officer.
“It will also
go towards equipment: we need pedometers and other fitness equipment. Essentially,
the money will be for anything to do with our Healthy Lifestyle project.”
