KOLKATA, India, March 20 (UPI) -- A Kolkata, India, man who retired from his health center job in 1995 has continued to show up for work for the past 14 years without a salary.
Relatives said Rabindranath Bhadra, who retired 14 years ago from the Jagatballavpur Block Health Center, needs to work in order to remain healthy, the Press Trust of India reported Thursday.
"He feels ill if he stops working," said Bhadra's wife, Suniti. "Once, we had stopped him from following his grueling routine. But he started feeling depressed and started developing cardiac problems and so we have allowed him to work so he stays fit and happy,"
Bosses and fellow workers at the health center said Bhadra remains an indispensable part of the staff.
"We have become dependent on him after his retirement. If he doesn't come for a day we face a lot of problems. He is indispensable," Rupanjali Biswas, medical officer of Jagatballavpur Block Health Center, told the Press Trust of India.
Bhadra said he isn't bothered by working for no pay.
"I get my pension and that is enough for me and so why should I ask for more?" he said.
