Senior bucks bowling trend
AUSTIN, Texas, March 30 (UPI) -- Texas septuagenarian Albert Waites is bucking a national trend when he says he still finds pleasure in trying to master the intricacies of bowling.
The Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Sunday that while seniors citizens' interest in the indoor sport is waning nationwide, Waites is fully embracing the hobby he first tried in 1958.
The construction company owner said for him, bowling is a game with numerous complexities simply too numerous to master.
"I like it because it's a challenge," said Waites, 71. "You can't master it. Just when you think you've got it, it knocks you down again."
Waites' hobby has not come without cost though as the senior citizen admits to spending thousands of dollars on his ever-expanding bowling ball collection.
"One year, I bought $10,000 worth of bowling balls," he told the newspaper regarding the extent of his passion.
American-Statesman said fewer than 2.7 million senior citizens went bowling in the United States in 2007. That figure represented a 7 percent drop from 2006 totals.
