Prednisolone May Reduce Miscarriage Risk

British scientists have found that the steroid prednisolone can reduce the risk of miscarriage.

The study by the University of Liverpool says prednisolone reduces the numbers of a type of cell known to play a role before and during early pregnancy. The findings may help treat a condition for which no satisfactory treatment currently exists.

The study's lead author Siobhan Quenby told the conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Copenhagen, "A randomized controlled trial of prednisolone for the prevention of miscarriage is urgently needed and I am in the process of setting one up."

But Quenby warned her research is still at an early stage and that she did not want women to be given false hopes.
