Bone marrow removal helps create new bone
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers have developed a technique to promote rapid formation of new bone by removing bone marrow and injecting a hormone.
Senior author Agnes Vignery, associate professor of orthopedics at Yale School of Medicine, said the development could radically change the way patients are treated for weakened or fractured hips and acute traumatic long bone fractures, the university said Thursday in a release.
The findings are published in the journal Tissue Engineering.
The study, conducted in collaboration with Unigene Laboratories Inc., evaluated the effect of bone marrow removal followed by daily injections of anabolic agents such as parathyroid hormone. Vignery said the procedure creates new bone tissue that appears structurally and biologically normal and endows the targeted bone with improved biomechanical properties.
Additional studies are under way to determine whether the newly formed bone can be preserved over a long period of time, the report said.
