CHICAGO, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- A study in the Netherlands of men taking testosterone to deter the effects of advancing age found that the hormone appears to do little harm and little good.
Researchers from Utrecht University tracked more than 200 men aged 60 to 80 for six months. Their results were published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Chicago Tribune reported.
While the researchers found that men taking testosterone developed more muscle mass than those on a placebo, they didn't become stronger.
The group concluded that their findings "do not support a net benefit ... of modest testosterone supplementation in healthy men."
Critics said that the doses of testosterone were too small for either benefits or health complications to show up. Some researchers also suggested that by limiting the study to healthy men the Utrecht team excluded those most likely to benefit from testosterone supplements.
