Medication For Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Three studies
point to the promise of a new treatment against post-traumatic stress disorder.
The treatment is Paxil (paroxetine HCl), researchers said at the 154th
annual American Psychiatric Association meeting in New Orleans.
In the study,
patients taking Paxil showed significant improvement, researchers said.
Paxil, currently under FDA review as a treatment for PTSD, is manufactured
by GlaxoSmithKline. Affecting up to one in seven Americans at some point
in their lives, PTSD is a debilitating condition that develops as a result
of exposure to a life-threatening event.
The person's
response involves intense fear, helplessness or horror. "These data are
great news for the millions of people suffering with PTSD, particularly
men and combat veterans who have been challenging to treat in the past,"
said Dr. Charles Nemeroff of Emory University School of Medicine.
