Music helps lessen pain in preemie babies

EDMONTON, Alberta, May 28 (UPI) -- A review conducted by researchers in Canada found that music may lessen pain in babies born prematurely.

The review of nine existing randomized trials, published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, covered a diverse range of populations studied in different ways, which made it difficult to reach definitive conclusions.

However, the researchers found much preliminary evidence for therapeutic benefits of music for specific indications.

The University of Alberta in Canada researchers say the outcomes most often reported in the trials were physiological measures such as heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and pain.

"There is preliminary evidence to suggest that music may have beneficial effects in terms of physiological parameters, behavioral states and pain reduction during painful medical procedures," the study authors said in a statement. "While there is preliminary evidence for some therapeutic benefits of music for specific indications, these benefits need to be confirmed in well-designed, high-quality trials."
