SunPal Can Help Prevent Sunburns

A Canadian company is launching a new sun care product that tells its user when it's time to get out of the sun.

All About Technologies's(AAT) SunPal Exposure Monitor is designed to help people prevent sunburn. The SunPal comes in two formats: a small stick-on patch that's attached to exposed skin or clothing and a narrow band that can be worn on the wrist or ankle.

Both patch and band are coated with compounds that gradually change color while exposed to outdoor UV (ultraviolet) rays, even on cloudy days.

SunPal goes through two color changes. The first signals when it's time to apply more sunscreen; the second shows when the wearer's medically safe dose of UV has been reached for the day.

Three formulations are available, each calibrated to guard different skin types, even children's sensitive skin. SunPal also absorbs sunscreens the same way skin does, so it changes color at a pace geared to a sunscreen's SPF (sun protection factor) rating.

SunPal can withstand temperatures up to 50 degrees (Celsius) and keeps working even when its wearer is sweating or in the water.

Says AAT President Charles Zuckerman: "People who play or work outdoors need to remember that sunscreens are time-limited and need to be reapplied regularly. SunPal takes care of the timing for you.

What's even better is that SunPal also tells you when you personally have had enough sun for the day, when even more sunscreen won't be enough to protect you from UV's harmful effects on your health."
