Dogs memorialized with hair sweaters

NEWCASTLE, England, March 19 (UPI) -- A Newcastle, England, couple said they will always be able to remember their deceased pets by what they left behind -- sweaters knitted from their hair.

Beth and Brian Willis said they were told of the curious use for molted dog hair by breeders and their first 100 percent canine sweater was knitted in 1990 from the hair of Kara, a white Samoyed, The Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

The couple said Kara died 12 years ago, but the sweater shows very little wear and tear from years of use.

"It is not actually a hair but a wool, which is why it is so good for clothes," Beth Willis said.

Willis said she was in the process of creating a sweater from the hair of another of the couple's dogs, a Swedish Lapphund named Penny, when the dog died about six years ago. However, she had enough fur left over to finish the garment, as well as enough left over for a third dog hair sweater.
