Rescued pig gives birth at shelter

BALERNO, Scotland, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Staff at an animal shelter in Scotland say the number of rescued pigs seeking new homes grew unexpectedly overnight recently from seven to 13.

The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescue shelter in Balerno said staff arrived at work two weeks ago to find six brand new additions to their swine population in the form of a litter of piglets, the Edinburgh Evening News reported Monday.

Center manager Diane Stewart said staff members had suspected one sow might be pregnant, but no one expected a birth so soon.

"We thought it would be quite difficult to re-home the pigs we already have but now we've got even more of them to try to re-home," she said.

"The piglets are still a couple of months off being ready, as they are still suckling, but as soon as they are weaned, we will need to find new owners for them too.

"They're really cute wee things and are getting on very well. Like the adults, they aren't causing us any trouble and are very intelligent, curious animals."

The seven adult pigs wound up at the shelter after being found abandoned in northern Scotland.
