Stray cat receives new hip
PLAINVIEW, N.Y., April 10 (UPI) -- A Plainview, N.Y., veterinarian said a 10-month-old stray tabby cat has undergone successful hip-replacement surgery.
Dr. Dominic Marino of Long Island Veterinary Specialists said he successfully performed the procedure on the cat, named Winston, and fixed the kitten's torn knee ligament during the surgery, New York Newsday reported Thursday.
Marino said Winston will spend the next few months at the hospital's center before being returned to the Humane Society of New York, which recently found the injured cat in the city's Manhattan borough.
"This cat will find a home," Marino said.
The animal surgeon said the $1,000 hip implant installed in the cat was donated by New Jersey veterinary orthopedics manufacturer BioMedtrix. He said other costs were covered by the Humane Society.
