Transition to digital changes mammograms

NEW YORK, April 10 (UPI) -- The shift to digital mammograms from traditional film means more women are being called back for repeat mammograms, The New York Times reported.

Problems arise when doctors and radiologists learning to interpret X-ray images on a computer screen try to compare a patient's previous mammograms on traditional X-ray film.

The newspaper said that of the 10 radiologists interviewed for the article, eight said recall rates went up while they learned to interpret the new digital images. As many as 10 percent of the women called back at those clinics during the transition period turned out to be healthy.

The increased clarity of digital images, however, may lead to fewer callbacks of healthy women in the long run, doctors said.
